What does nursing home neglect look like?

There is nothing worse than the thought that a loved one is not receiving the care and attention he or she deserves in a nursing home setting.

While it's never quite as simple as it sounds, it's your job to keep an eye out for nursing home neglect. If you have any reason to believe that something is going on – such as a staff that is not providing the appropriate level of care – you need to speak up and take action.

It can be a challenge to pinpoint nursing home neglect, but here are some of the more common warning signs:

  • Poor personal hygiene. Nursing home staff should help patients with personal hygiene. If this begins to become a problem, it could be a sign of nursing home neglect.
  • Poor living conditions. If you don't like what you are seeing in regards to living conditions, you need to speak with the person in charge about what is going on. There may be a good reason for this, but you need to get to the bottom of it.
  • Malnutrition. It's imperative that nursing home residents receive the proper nutrition.
  • Loss of mobility. This comes into play when nursing home staff neglects to help patients move around.
  • Unexplained injury. Any injury, no matter what it may be, should have an explanation. If the staff cannot tell you the cause of the injury, something is wrong.

Knowing what nursing home neglect looks like is just the start. If you think there is something going on, you should speak with your loved one as well as the staff.

From there, depending on the situation, you may need to take steps to protect the legal rights and overall well-being of your loved one.
