Hospital cleanliness and the patient experience

Hospitals are an important part of the medical industry, specifically for those who are suffering from emergency conditions or difficult illnesses. Millions of people visits hospitals across Ohio each year. The cleanliness of the hospitals is vital to the experience of the patient, especially when it comes to preventing infections.

Even though a visit to the hospital is to help people get better, or recover from an injury, some patients can find themselves in a worse condition than when they arrived. This is most often due to an infection the patient suffers when in the hospital. The infection can lead to serious injury or illness.

There are instances where the infection occurs due to the cleanliness, or lack thereof, of the hospital. A hospital must be cleaned from top to bottom as often as possible to prevent infection in patients and even in visitors and employees. In fact, infections acquired in hospitals are the eighth-leading cause of death in the United States, right behind diabetes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows statistics that are quite alarming. Roughly 650,000 people develop an infection in the hospital each year and 75,000 of those patients die from the infection. Two of the most common bacteria that spread in hospitals and cause infections include Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and C. diff. These are also two of the most difficult bacterial infections to treat.

Even if the hospital is cleaned properly, medical equipment can cause infection. Two common pieces of equipment that can cause infection are the catheter and IVs. In order to avoid infection, patients should ask each day if the equipment is needed for treatment, or if the equipment has been changed recently.
